search pagination: do not panic when timeouts occur

Fixes #6383

Test plan: Manually tested, in order to automatically test this aspect we will need some high-level e2e tests for paginated search. Regardless, since #6619 eliminates this from happening in general this would be a very rare issue to regress on anyway.
